One day, Karla Solรญs came across a puppy stranded on the streets of Tijuana, Mexico. The little dog was cowering under a car, shivering with cold and fear, in a truly terrible state. He had severe skin issues and was clearly malnourished. Karla was moved by the puppy’s resigned expression, and without hesitation, picked him up to try and nurse him back to health. She named him Elliot and he required several months of recovery. Not only was his physical body injured, but his spirit seemed broken too. Karla had to work hard to gain his trust and confidence. Although Elliot wasn’t aggressive, he appeared to have lost interest in life.
The sad look on the shaggy man’s face was heart-wrenching, but Karla knew just how to lift his spirits. Along with nursing him back to health, she formed an incredible bond with the mixed-breed dog who became her faithful companion. She tended to his wounds and administered his medication, once the veterinarian verified he had contracted Ehrlichia, a sickness transmitted by ticks. Elliot required ample time to recover, and Karla never left his side during the entire process. However, when the moment arrived, she realized that it was necessary to locate a loving family for him, which she was unable to provide.
Solรญs reached out to Becky Moder, a dog adoption advocate in the United States, for assistance with paperwork and funding to rescue a puppy. Working together, they were confident they would find the perfect home for the pup. As Elliot’s fur grew back, he gained strength and was ready to find his forever home. Moder generously offered to transport Elliot from Mexico to San Diego, where he was eventually accepted by The Barking Lot Rescue. Kim Forest and her partner crossed paths with Elliot at the TBLR shelter and decided to bring him into their home with open arms.
During that period, the puppy was nowhere near the same as it was in Mexico. By the end of the day, Karla was thrilled with the progress that Asher, the gentle Elliot, had made with his new family. Even though Karla and Becky would have loved to keep him, they understood that rescuers sometimes have to let go in order to continue helping others.
The ladies were convinced as they gave away the furry little creature. Karla’s act of compassion towards this puppy, whom she saved from a lot of pain and suffering, has greatly inspired her to further pursue animal welfare. It’s hard for her to fathom how some individuals can turn a blind eye to such circumstances, but now she realizes that there is always more she can do to make a difference. She is steadfast in her resolve to persist in this endeavor.
According to Asher’s mother, he has slowly become more outgoing and expressive. Although he still maintains his peaceful demeanor, he is showing a livelier side of himself. Recently, they found out that he has a fondness for teddy animals. He started taking her teddy bears and now he enjoys playing with any toy that doesn’t make noise. Playing with these toys has become his favorite activity.
Whenever Asher steps out of the house, people are immediately drawn to his stunning appearance and luscious red fur. Forrest, his owner, shared how it brings him and his spouse joy to see their beloved pet receive such attention because they believe he deserves it.
